Dan covered it pretty well. An added bonus to playing a bunch of Random(All) games before ever choosing starter cards is that the chance of earning a card from winning a game is higher when you have less than 10 cards -- so it's at least somewhat easy to earn a few random ones, and then fill in what you want that's missing with your starter cards. That'll likely give you a couple options you will be happy with.

Almost every character in the game is playable and decent, though some are a bit worse than others. Helene and Andromeda are probably the 2 worst right now. Not that they're awful - they just have some issues (and they're also both one range only).

The only items I would probably never use right now myself are the Gem of Souls, Flash Powder, and Reinforced Breastplate. They aren't useless, but there is always a better option IMO. The only character I wouldn't use right now is Helene - though a select few good players do actually use her with good results.

Hopefully that's not an information overload for you, hehe. But it might give you some ideas to work with. If you care, the most used characters currently are Cornelius, Vanessa, Yoshiro, Anex, and Ubuntu, so those are the ones generally considered the best overall. But you certainly don't have to use them - any of them - to do well!

I'm currently running Rumiko-Higashi-Onimaru. Before that I was running Vanessa-Popo-Cain. Tons of possible options.

So if anyone else is still interested in this, they're planning on running a league tournament deal between top players. It's still a while out yet, but if you want to be eligible for entry to the main league you'll need Skill Rank 30 or higher. (I know Dan is pretty close to that, and I would bet Luke could make it up there if he tried. Not sure where everybody else that's played stands.)

So yeah, just thought I'd throw that out there in case anyone was interested.

p.s. there's a challenge to win Anex right now if you don't already have her.
